ARRL Emergency Communications Training

SCARES I History

Our first tow vehicle, SCARES I, was a local donation from Perry Port Salem EMS Donation in 1999. Pictured here with SCARES II in tow. This truck SCARES I, is used not only to tow our EmComm trailer, but it also carries our generators, coax, antennas and much more.

Our next tow vehicle was obtained in 2002. and was a retired 1985 Ford E350 EMS vehicle that was donated to us by one of our local communities in Shelby County, the Ft Loramie Fire Department. SCARES used this vehicle all the way up to February of 2021. This version housed our 45′ Will-Burt pneumatic masts, as well as carried our equipment.

Over the years, Shelby Co. ARES had several fundraisers, and early in November of 2020, SCARES was able to upgraded to the 1999 Ford F550. With a lot of TLC and innovation, we ended up with a more reliable vehicle to tow SCARES II. We can also detach and take the F550 to another location as a seperate mobile station. The Ford carries our Honda EM-5000, and two Honda EU-2000 grnerators, as well as a low profile repeater and many accessories and equipment.

SCARES II

SCARES II, is a 8’ x 16’ cargo trailer, that was purchased by SCARES, and the interior was insulated and designed by Mike Nagel, WD8LLN, from Auglaize county, and Scott Garrett, W8JSG, an original SCARES AEC. It was ready and activated for Y2K. Since then, we have updated the electrical, both the 120 VAC and 12 VDC systems. SCARES II also sports a Will-Burt 37’ pneumatic mast. Our drivers are responsible for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, as well as knowing all of the different systems, and organization of both vehicles.

We recently updated all of our amateur radio stations with the Kenwood TM-V71A, VHF/UHF dual banders, and the mulit band, multi mode Yaesu FT-857D. One of our Kenwood stations, and the Yaesu station is equipped with a USB Signal Link for digital operations. We have a Citizens Band radio, a couple commercial radios and a marine radio. Networked logging computers with internet access was recently added. SCARES II also sports a Will-Burt 37’ pneumatic mast. Our drivers are responsible for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, as well as knowing all of the different systems, and organization of both vehicles.
